Women at Work: How Habitat’s Women Build is Reshaping Affordable Housing

Big Bend Habitat for Humanity is thrilled to announce the launch of Women Build 2024, a special initiative that encourages women in our community to take an active role in the construction process, all while empowering them to grow in confidence, leadership, and skill. This project is part of Habitat for Humanity’s broader national movement to engage women in the construction of affordable housing and is designed to bring together women from all walks of life to build homes, hope, and a stronger sense of community.

What Is Women Build? Women Build is a hands-on initiative that empowers women to make a tangible difference by volunteering on the construction site, participating in leadership roles, and helping to raise funds for affordable housing projects. Whether you have years of experience or are picking up a hammer for the first time, Women Build welcomes everyone. The project aims to address the housing crisis by creating safe, affordable homes for local families while providing a space for women to gain construction experience and confidence in their abilities.

In 2024, our chapter will focus on constructing two homes through Women Build, with the support of female volunteers, community leaders, and business partners. These homes will provide stability for families, helping them achieve long-term success in a safe and welcoming environment.

Why Women Build Matters: Women Build is about more than just building homes—it’s about breaking barriers. Traditionally, construction has been a male-dominated field, but through Women Build, we’re working to change that narrative by giving women the opportunity to take charge of the building process. It’s a space where women can come together, learn new skills, and support one another in a powerful, community-centered environment.

Empowering Women Through Skill Building: One of the key components of Women Build is skill development. During the build, women volunteers will have the opportunity to learn a wide range of construction skills, including carpentry, drywall installation, painting, and more. This hands-on experience not only empowers women in the field of construction but also helps them develop valuable skills they can apply in their personal and professional lives.

For many participants, Women Build is a chance to step outside of their comfort zone, try something new, and build their confidence. It’s also an incredible way to give back to the community while forming lasting connections with other women.

How You Can Get Involved: Women Build 2024 needs volunteers, donors, and supporters! Here’s how you can join:

  • Volunteer on the Build Site: No prior construction experience is necessary, and all tools and training are provided on-site. Whether you can give one day or multiple, your help will make a difference.
  • Sponsor a Woman Builder: If you can’t participate in the build directly, you can still support a woman builder by making a financial contribution that will help fund the construction materials and tools needed for the project.
  • Attend a Fundraising Event: Leading up to the build, we’ll be hosting several fundraising events to help cover the costs of construction. Attend an event or host your own to rally support for Women Build.

Women Build 2024 is more than just a construction project—it’s a movement that empowers women to make an impact in their community. By coming together to build homes, women are building stronger communities and gaining confidence that will last a lifetime. We invite all women in the Big Bend area to get involved and join us in making a difference. Together, we can build homes, hope, and brighter futures for families in need.d tempor incididunt ut labore et dolore magna aliqua.
